1-b&L.jpg

Brother and sister Ben and Lyndsy D., students at Levelland High School and Levelland Middle School, have both won $3000 in U.S. Savings Bonds in this year's National eCYBERMISSION Competition.

eCYBERMISSION is a U.S. Army - sponsored, web-based science, math and technology competition that allows students in grades 6th - 9th to compete for regional and national awards while working to solve problems in their communities.

Lynsdy's team the "Sun Busters", comprised of LMS student Lyndsy D. and Whiteface students Brisa B., Andersen G., and Chase W. are regional winners. The "Sun Busters" researched skin cancer causes and prevention to determine the messages people get about having tan skin. They have won $3000 each in U.S. Savings Bonds and a trip to Washington D.C. to compete for the 7th grade National Title and an additional $5000 each in U.S. Savings Bonds.

Ben's team the "Lunartics" comprised of LHS student Ben D. and Whiteface students Mario H., Keaton T. and Zachary W. are 2nd place winners and have won $3000 each in U.S. Savings Bonds. The "Lunartics" investigated the decrease in student interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathmatics (STEM).

This is Lyndsy's secong year to compete and her first time to win regionals.  This is Ben's third time to compete.  His team has won the National eCYBERMISSION 6th and 7th grade title and he has won a total of $19,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds.

Website Design
1-Thunder Car Show Winners.jpg
The Thunder of the Plains Car Show asked Sandy Bridges, Levelland High School technology teacher, if her web-site design class would be interested in creating a web site for their car show which is held each summer in Levelland.  Mrs. Bridges and her class were excited to do this.  They decided to have a contest with teams of students designing web sites and letting the car show determine the winner.  Many excellent designs were created, and the car show judges had a hard time in choosing the winner.  The winning design was created by Ty T and Whitman P.  A picture of the two young men and their winning design is shown at the top of this story.  Congratulations to Mrs. Bridges, Ty, Whitman, and her entire class for a job well done.

Lobos Excel at Regional Powerlifting Meet
1-PL.JPG
A total of 20 members of the Levelland High School powerlifting team were among the nearly 300 competitors at last weekend’s Region I Powerlifting Meet held at Levelland High School on March 8. The meet included lifters from as far south as Alpine, as far west as the El Paso area, as far east as Eastland and as far north as Perryton. The competition took place in the 3A Division and the 2A-1A combined Division. Levelland won the 3A team title with 29 points, edging out Lubbock Cooper with 26 points. It was the third straight regional win for the Lobo squad.

The top 2 in each weight class advance to the State meet which will be at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene on March 29, and Levelland ISD had three state qualifiers. They are as follows:   Dusty W  132 Class

                                               JJ V        165 Class

Ruben F   275 Class

JJ V also set new regional records in the bench press (375 lbs.) and his overall total (1300 lbs.) was a new record. He was also awarded the outstanding bench press, deadlift and overall totals awards.

Coach Barry Newton, the LHS coach who is also the Region I Director, had this to say: “It is a very difficult thing to win a regional championship but to do it three straight years is truly remarkable for these kids. Each year the target on your back gets a little bigger because everyone wants to beat the champions, but our kids rose to the challenge and refused to let that happen. Our kids just work extremely hard in the weight room each and every day and compete at a very high level on meet day. I am so proud of them and our coaches for another outstanding year for Levelland Lobo Powerlifting.”

The results of the Levelland lifters are as follows (includes squat, bench press, deadlift and total weight):
